From AI to Robot Delivery: Top October Tech Developments

As the days get shorter and the air becomes crisp, October has delivered a rush of technological improvements that are both cutting-edge and necessary for keeping ahead in an increasingly digital world. From artificial intelligence and augmented reality to personal device security, major players such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft are releasing ideas ready to change our everyday interactions with technology.

Google Postpones Next-Gen AI Agent Project Astra

Google announced that their advanced AI initiative, known as Project Astra, will not be launched until 2025, as stated by CEO Sundar Pichai during the company’s Q3 earnings call. Project Astra, unveiled at Google’s I/O 2024 event, seeks to develop AI agents proficient in real-time, multimodal comprehension and interactions, ranging from object recognition via smartphone cameras to executing activities such as travel reservations. While some anticipated a consumer-oriented version may be released in 2024, this now seems improbable as Google persists in its development efforts.

Apple Unveils AI-Powered Features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Apple has officially launched its AI-powered features, known as Apple Intelligence, on select iPhone, iPad, and Mac models. The initial rollout encompasses enhanced photo editing capabilities and call transcription, in addition to enhancements to Siri, writing, and editing. But with iOS 18.2, additional important AI capabilities such as Image Wand and sophisticated Siri interactions are expected to appear in December.

Apple Releases First AI Features with iOS 18.1 Update

Apple Intelligence suite has been debuted with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Accessible on a few devices including iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, certain iPads and Macs, the new version offers tools for writing, picture cleaning, and a redesigned Siri. Apple Intelligence avoids the general data dependency common to other generative artificial intelligence models by training on a chosen dataset, therefore adopting a unique strategy. Anticipated later this year, the next iOS 18.2 release will have more AI technologies like Genmoji and Visual Intelligence.

Public Phone Charging

FBI Issues Alert Against Using Public Phone Charging Stations

The FBI has issued a warning to consumers to avoid using public phone charging stations, such as those in malls and airports, due to potential malware risks. Dubbed “juice jacking,” this danger arises from hacked USB ports or cables infecting computers with harmful software. Instead, the FBI and the FCC advise carrying personal charging cords and utilizing conventional power outlets. The alert draws attention to issues wherein hacked ports can let hackers access passwords, images, and personal information including emails.

Anthropic’s Claude AI Now Supports Code Execution and Data Analysis

Anthropic has updated its Claude chatbot with the ability to write and run JavaScript scripts for data analysis. The application, currently in preview, enables Claude to perform precise computations and analyze data from files such as PDFs and spreadsheets, presenting results as interactive visualizations. The tool functions as a coding sandbox, delivering precise, reproducible responses and enabling Claude to systematically manage data.

Instagram Improves Safety Measures to Guard Teens Against Sextortion Scams

Instagram has introduced additional safety measures including prohibiting screenshots of ephemeral material in private messaging to protect teenagers from sextortion threats. Content sent as “view once,” or “allow replay,” cannot now be stored or seen on desktops, therefore providing an extra degree of protection beyond Snapchat’s screenshot warnings. Additional safeguards include prohibiting suspect accounts from connecting with teenagers, limiting their access to following lists, and internationally implementing a nudity-blurring function in direct messaging, which is activated by default for adolescents.

Delivery Robots

Avride Launches Energy-Efficient Four-Wheeled Sidewalk Delivery Robots

Offering better energy economy and dexterity over their previous six-wheeled model, robotics startup Avide has shown a new four-wheeled sidewalk delivery robot. Built for Uber Eats deliveries in Austin and South Korea, the revised robot has a re-engineered chassis with rotating wheels that let it easily negotiate tight corners and narrow sidewalks. Improved with flexible cargo possibilities and Nvidia’s Jetson Orin platform, the robot also has a friendly LED panel meant to lower vandalism. Avide has a partnership with Uber for further deployment in Dallas and Jersey City and intends to add “at least a hundred” robots to its fleet by January 2025.

Microsoft Teams Adds a Unified Chat-Channel View and Threaded Conversations

With the new unified design that integrates chats and channels into a single view, accessible in a public test next month, Microsoft Teams plans to enhance user experience with the inclusion of threaded discussions by mid-2025. The simplified UI will let users handle conversations, teams, and channels under one area, therefore removing the need to move between many tabs. Customizing choices, a new favorites area, message previews, and a mentions view abound in the upgrade. On desktop and mobile devices, this consistent approach seeks to streamline processes and ease navigation between Teams.
